Union County Information

Union County is a county situated in the state of South Dakota. A census demonstrated that Union County had a total population of 16,811 in 2020. Elk Point is the current county seat in Union County.

It was formed in 1862.

Originally named Cole County, its name was changed to Union because of Civil War sentiment.

Union County is part of the Sioux City, IA–NE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Union County Criminal Records

Union County records their criminal activity in the form of criminal records. These records cover murders, rapes, burglaries, arson, motor vehicle theft, assaults, and crimes of a sexual nature. All police records in Union County are updated. In Union County, locals can use a search tool to get access to the records. Any individual on release or in jail can be searched for using the tool. Union County legally keeps current sex offender registers. These include any offender living, attending school, working, or imprisoned in the Union County area. This up-to-date register is then made available to the public, as is the fundamental right of anyone living in Union County.

There is one federal district court, a state supreme court, and trial courts of general and limited jurisdiction in South Dakota. The Federal district courts hear appeals from state courts and are also the point of origination for federal cases and lawsuits. South Dakota Supreme Court is the state's court of last resort and has five judgeships. Circuit Courts are courts of general jurisdiction in South Dakota. The 66 counties in the state are divided into seven judicial circuits with forty-one judicial circuit judges.

Nonetheless, records in Union County do come at a cost. Union County birth records cost $15. Death certificates in Union County will set a person back $15. Marriage records in Union County cost $15.

NOTE - In order to get hold of records, Union County requesters must adhere to several rules. The office has opening times of 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. CST from Monday to Friday. In Union County, some form of photo ID is needed to purchase records. Both driver's licenses and state IDs would suffice. All public record requests in Union County must be put in writing.
