It was formed in 1880.

It was named for Merritt H. Day, pioneer and 1879 Dakota Territory legislator.

Nonetheless, records in Day County do come at a cost. First copies of birth records cost $15. Death records in Day County cost $15 for the first copy. Marriage certificates in Day County will set a person back $15 for a first copy.

NOTE - There are various rules that need to be followed in order for Day County requesters to obtain records. The office is open between 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. CST from Monday to Friday to get records in-person in Day County.
