It was created in 1875 and was organized in 1877.

It was named for George Armstrong Custer. He was a United States Army officer and cavalry commander in the American Civil War and the American Indian Wars.

NOTE - In order to get records, Custer County requesters must adhere to several rules. The office is only open between 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. MST from Monday to Friday. If a requester wishes to get reports, they must bring some form of photo identification. This could include a driver’s license or state ID.
